Tadalafil is an oral PDE-5 inhibitor. It means that this medicine stops or prevents the actions of PDE in the penis. PDE-5 is and enzyme which normally controls and regulates the presence of the other chemical known as cGMP. This chemical helps to relax the muscles and make the blood vessels to open and allow more blood flowing through them. Sometimes, PDE-5 amount gets greater than needed in the penile region and it starts to reduce the amount of cGMP. Tadalafil helps in such situation. Upon sexual stimulation, which is required for normal process of erection, Tadalafil helps to diminish the PDE-5 action and increase the amount of cGMP.

When it happens, more blood starts to flow through the blood vessels to the penis. The blood gets trapped within the penis to create an erection. Once a man reaches an orgasm, the extra blood leaves the penis and an erection goes away.
Besides the treatment for erectile dysfunction, Tadalafil is approved to relieve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The medicine is used to inhibit the PDE-5 which is also found in the prostate tissue. Still the precise mechanism of action of Tadalafil for this purpose is not known.
It was clinically proven, that Tadalafil works mostly for the PDE type 5. Still in higher doses than recommended, this medicine may also affect other PDE enzymes.
